How can our laughter be this lovely, our kisses this sweet, our songs this hypnotic, and our pain and fear this reckless?
I ponder the river of our existence: Several million years playing in egalitarian bands a hundred singers deep, walking, dreaming in an immense, deafening, global ecology. I consider the last 12,000 years (.004% of human existence): The ecology of our psyche and of our Earth has been profoundly transformed, wounded and fragmented. There is primordial love here and a new fangled terror.
ℏurricane soothe is the result of my embodied reckoning with this collective fever dream that has seen the erasure of indigeneity, establishment of a ruthless hegemony of gender and race, and exploitation by pathogens and extractive economies supercharged by personal, generational and societal misunderstandings about the consequences of control. Out of necessity, I have been gathering resources for communication with the violated human body and the inviolate energies that flow through it.
I have noticed themes among the people who have provided the truest guidance, respite and solace to me. There is a distinct sensation of peace, safety and possibility in their presence. It is felt when one begins to entertain, let alone celebrate and trust, that there is vastly more at work here than the modern psyche’s neat hierarchic gridwork of logic, linearity and individuality can manage.
What is beyond the dismissal of the body’s language? The trivialization of synchronicity and of cosmic pattern so core to indigenous wisdom the world over? The Earth’s fragmented ecologies, when freed from relentless maintenance of hierarchy and hegemony, need only time to burst forth and re-weave themselves in fruitful riotous relationships (consider the front lawn). You and I are made of the same creative momentum and are subject to, and subject ourselves to, the same extraction, suppression and orphaning. Thus the (planetary) body revolts and the heart’s guidance retreats and fades.
We are as sick as the earth and as resilient. The stakes could not be higher.
Liberation of the body and spirit must be a common cause for collaboration between our most intellectual and sensual, driven and depressed, trusting and terrified, optimistic and nihilistic, tender and ruthless, ancient and brand new aspects. All inner archetypes, parts and narratives of our psyche share the vessel of the body. We can school, soothe and befuddle our intellects out of their terrified masquerade, into embodied synergy, into cyclicality, into sufficient silence, stillness, song and dance for our non verbal, wounded and ineffable aspects to creatively participate in this living momentum so far beyond our control.
There is an immense chorus, common conviction, ancient and current consensus, across the most disparate cultural containers - that life [(embodiment {being in a body}) being filled with and surrounded by relationship] craves love, responds to reverence, nourishes when nourished. Between the violence of religious institutions, the predatoriness of new age spirituality, and the sheer volume of blood and tears on this planet, suspending one’s disbelief is terrifying. It’s far too late to be afraid.
You are here a part of pattern, harmony and reciprocity as much as utter chaos, pain and destruction. There is dignity in all of it. The repairing and nurturing of our inner ecology is our most immediate agency and defines the nature of our influence on whatever we care for and act on in this life. The soil of the collective psyche is rich for learning, rerooting human ecologies that can endure and soothe this collective hurricane. Everything we need is here.
